About Recipes by Alexa

Recipes by Alexa is a recipe site built on one principle: every recipe should work in a real kitchen, for a real family, on a real night of the week.

Since 2024

How Recipes by Alexa Started

Alexa Brennan spent eleven years teaching second grade before she left the classroom to be home with her kids full time. What she did not expect was how much of that time would be spent standing in the kitchen at 5:45pm, phone in hand, trying to find a recipe that was fast enough to actually make, simple enough to actually follow, and good enough that her family would actually eat it.

The recipes she kept finding were either too complicated or too boring. Beautiful step-by-step videos that assumed she had all afternoon. Quick-fix recipes that tasted like the compromise they were. She started keeping her own notes - the things that actually worked on real nights, adapted and tested until she was confident in them.

After two years of collecting and refining those recipes, her neighbor suggested she start sharing them. The teacher in her liked the idea of writing instructions people could actually follow. She launched Recipes by Alexa in 2024 with a small collection of weeknight dinners, a handful of birthday cake recipes she had made for her kids over the years, and a commitment to never publishing anything she would not confidently serve on a Tuesday night.

Today Recipes by Alexa covers everything from quick beef dinners and chicken recipes to birthday cakes, breakfast ideas, easy desserts, and homemade pizza. The same standard applies to every recipe: tested, clear, and genuinely worth making.

Founder & Head Recipe Developer
Alexa Brennan is a mother of two, former teacher, and the founder of Recipes by Alexa. She approaches recipe writing the same way she approached lesson planning - with clarity, patience, and a genuine belief that anyone can learn to do this well.

If the instructions need a culinary degree to follow, they are not finished yet. I rewrite until anyone can do it.

Why Recipes by Alexa Exists

Most recipe content online is built for an audience that does not actually exist - a home cook with unlimited time, a fully stocked pantry of specialty ingredients, and a kitchen that looks like it belongs in a magazine. Real home cooks are cooking after a full day of work, with tired kids underfoot, and a fridge that has not been restocked since last Thursday.

Recipes by Alexa exists for those cooks. Our mission is to make home cooking genuinely achievable - not just on the best nights, but on the average ones. We believe that eating together at home is one of the most valuable habits a family can build, and we take it seriously when a confusing recipe or an unrealistic ingredient list gets in the way of that.

Every recipe we publish is tested in a real home kitchen, written for all skill levels, and reviewed before it goes live. We do not publish anything we would not make ourselves.

01

Honest Testing

Every recipe is cooked at least twice on standard equipment with supermarket ingredients. Cook times are timed, not estimated. What you read is what you will experience.

02

Clear Instructions

Instructions are written like a knowledgeable friend explaining something - no assumed knowledge, no jargon without explanation, no steps that assume you already know the next step.

03

Recipes Worth Making

Every recipe earns its place by being something a real family would genuinely want to eat. If it does not pass that test, it does not get published.

How We Develop Recipes

Every recipe at Recipes by Alexa starts with a clear purpose. Before a single ingredient is written down, we ask what situation this recipe is solving and who it is for. That question shapes every decision that follows.

We develop and test recipes in multiple rounds, adjusting quantities, timing, and technique based on what actually happens in the kitchen rather than what should theoretically happen. Recipes that do not deliver on flavor, texture, and ease do not get published regardless of how good they look on paper.

Every published recipe also goes through a writing review. We ask whether a nervous beginner could follow every instruction without confusion. If the answer is no, the recipe gets rewritten until it is yes.
